DESIGN PROCESS
There is beauty in flexibility. Where some already have a master plan and just need assistance with more thoughtful planting choices, others invite us to an empty canvas. GBRLD aims to provide precisely what you need to get the project done, leaving you proud to enjoy your space.
Initial Consultation
No matter the scope or project size, thoughtful design requires thoughtful observation. All projects begin with a site visit to discuss your priorities, expectations, and aspirations. Gavin then follows up with a proposed plan of action and outlines the goals and objectives for the space.
Concept Development & Precedent Studies
GBRLD dives head first into your landscape to better understand its granular details. Early work includes a topographic survey, soil samples, and ample time in the space to understand it intimately. From this comes early concepts: the ‘bones’ of the project. This can be in the form of sketches, base plans, or 3D renderings. Simultaneously GBRLD schedules a meeting to go over precedent imagery from similar projects to further refine the palette of materials, styles, and plants you’re initially drawn to.
Master Planning
Once a concept has been discussed and agreed on, a more in depth master plan is developed. This begins to zoom in on the site details, providing specific planting plans, dimensioned layout plans, and a host of other as-needed sheets including site preparation, lighting and grading.
PLANTING DESIGN & INSTALLATION
Many projects fall short in the plant design phase, which is where GBRLD excels. Whether as part of a comprehensive master plan or simply a planting scheme, Gavin thrives most in the artistic composition of plant communities. Thoughtfully constructed planting schedules allow the garden to sit effortlessly in its greater landscape, and you to fully enjoy yourself in the new space.
Construction Documentation & Contractor Coordination
Compiling site analysis, base-plans, and construction details, GBRLD connects with local contractors for a seamless transition from design to implementation. Estimates are compiled to help you make an informed decision in hiring, while GBRLD serves as a middleman between you and the talented crews brought in to turn plans into product.
material sourcing & Management Plans
GBRLD helps you navigate material shortages by sourcing plants and hardscape materials from a larger net of growers, quarries, and brokers. No need to sacrifice the perfect palette just because the nearby nurseries are out of stock.
As your garden matures, thoughtful edits and additions are key to the integrity of the initial design. GBRLD develops and implements maintenance schedules and techniques to ensure your garden thrives well past year one.
Additional Services
For those looking for less comprehensive, but equally personal assistance in the garden, GBRLD works with homeowners, designers, and contractors to offer consultation services and coaching.
One-time Consultations
A good option for those who already have the dream garden, and just need help with the finer details— or designers and contractors who need some suggestions on a project but don’t have the budget for a complete landscape masterplan.
Gavin will walk the site with you, make observations and answer any questions you might have, and follow up with a written set of notes, suggestions, and resources to tackle improvements.
LANDSCAPE INSPECTIONS
Whether considering a new home or just moving in, GBRLD wants to educate homeowners on what sort of landscape they’re inheriting.
Noting invasive species, drainage concerns, soil quality, and a host of other important data points, Gavin offers an exterior complement to the traditional house inspection— through the eyes of a trained horticulturist.
Garden Coaching
Avid gardener or self-proclaimed brown thumb, we can all benefit from some encouragement and guidance in the garden.
GBRLD works with motivated homeowners (and renters!) to uncover the potential of their landscape, either through regular on-site check ins or virtual zoom calls. No topic is off-limits, as Gavin helps you decide what’s important to you in a garden, and how you can best achieve it.
